Movement joints

Guidance on sizing

Movement joints must be incorporated into the paved surface to absorb the stresses caused by temperature fluctuations, settlement or traffic loads. They prevent uncontrolled cracking and ensure the durability of the paved surface.

General principles

  • Movement joints from the base and adjoining structures (buildings, manholes, channels) must be carried through the paving surface.
  • In bound construction, movement joints should be provided at intervals of approximately 5 m to a maximum of 8 m.
  • The joint width should be at least 10 mm and depends on the expected movement.
  • Movement joints must not be filled with rigid joint mortar. Use suitable permanently elastic sealants.

Recommendations

For correct execution we recommend observing the relevant technical standards (ZTV Pflaster-StB, DIN 18318, FGSV guidelines). If in doubt, contact our technical support team. We are happy to assist you with the planning.
