vdw VarioSand

vdw VarioSand is the innovative jointing solution for unbound construction: where joint mortar can no longer be used, the range of applications of vdw VarioSand begins. This cohesive special joint sand of the latest generation is weed-inhibiting, low-dust to apply and ideally suited for driveways, footpaths and concrete paving with narrow joints — in private and public areas with normal traffic loads.

Application

Requirements Stable, load-bearing, permanently water-permeable substrate. Joint depth ≥ 40 mm, full stone height on trafficked surfaces, joint width continuously at least 2 mm to max. 4 mm, outdoor and object temperature at least 8 °C, max. 30 °C, frost-free period after installation at least 2 days!

Test area With concrete paving, contact between vdw VarioSand and the stone surface may possibly cause visual changes. As a general rule, we recommend laying out a test area.

Tools & equipment Coconut broom, rubber squeegee, Simplex hammer / large rubber mallet, water hose with adjustable nozzle, sponge or sponge board if required. Only on new-build surfaces a "large" plate compactor, otherwise a "small" plate compactor of approx. 60 to 80 kg for compacting the joint material.

Preparation Clean the paving surface until residue-free and dry it. The stone surface and the joint flanks must be completely dry, as moisture activates the binder in the product.

Installation Sweep the material in dry until the joints are completely filled. Sweep off the surface and compact thoroughly with a small plate compactor (60 to 80 kg) fitted with a protective mat. Repeat this process up to the desired fill height. Check compaction with a finger test; the material must no longer yield. Fill the joints to max. 2 mm below the top edge of the stone. Then sweep the stone surface residue-free with a soft, clean and dry broom. The chamfers of the stones must be exposed.

Activating the binder Spray the surface evenly and thoroughly in small sections, starting at the lowest point, with a soft water jet using clean water. Repeat the process approx. 4 to 5 times until the joint material is saturated with water over its entire fill depth. Do not wash the joint material out of the joint in the process. Do not flood the surface and avoid the formation of puddles.

Aftercare The joint sand must dry through completely. Protect the surface from rain for 3 hours. After 3 hours the surface can take foot traffic. Drivable after approx. 3 days. Final traffic release after 5 days.

Important notes Permanent wetness in the joint can damage the product. vdw VarioSand is not resistant to pressure washers or sweeper-vacuum machines!
