Trass Drainage Mortar
vdw 490 Universal-DrainMörtel is the highly drainable, trass-cement-bound bedding mortar for natural stone and concrete paving surfaces where the water permeability of the overall paving is paramount. Suitable for surfaces with light to heavy traffic loads, such as laying pavers for terraces, driveways and roads.
Requirements The sub-base and base course must be sufficiently level, load-bearing and water-draining. They must be dimensioned so that no harmful deformations occur. Ensure drainage via a drainable substrate or sufficient drainage gradient, if necessary in combination with a drainage mat. Ambient and substrate temperature > 5 °C, max. 25 °C.
Tools Free-fall mixer or forced-action mixer, water hose, spray nozzle, shovel, broom, paving tools, wheelbarrow.
Mixing the trass drainage mortar Mix vdw 490 Universal-DrainMörtel homogeneously with 8 % clean, cold water (2.0 litres of water per 25 kg of dry mortar) to an earth-moist consistency. No maturing time required. Stiffened mortar must not be made workable again with either water or fresh mortar.
Mortar application The mixed mortar is applied in the usual manner. Only as much material should be laid out as can be processed within the working time. The layer thickness must be at least 4 cm and max. 10 cm in the compacted state, depending on the area of use or construction method. Set the pavers firmly into vdw 490 Universal-DrainMörtel with a hammer. To improve adhesion, we recommend dipping the pavers into vdw 495 Universal-HaftBrücke before jointing. After 48 hours the surfaces can be jointed with vdw paving joint mortar.
For slab installation Screed vdw 490 Universal-DrainMörtel level, observing the respective bedding thickness. Before laying the slabs, apply vdw 495 Universal-HaftBrücke to the underside of the slab. The joint area must be free of vdw 495 Universal-HaftBrücke.
Alternative application (exclusively for areas with pedestrian use) The mortar is poured directly out of the bag, applied in the appropriate layer thickness and screeded level. Then activate the laid-out area with a fine water spray mist. To improve adhesion, we recommend dipping the pavers into vdw 495 Universal-HaftBrücke before laying. Before laying slabs, apply vdw 495 Universal-HaftBrücke to the underside of the slab. The joint area must be free of vdw 495 Universal-HaftBrücke. Once the paving surface is complete, wet it intensively with water so that the water reaches the bedding layer via the joints and activates curing.
Important The mortar must be protected against too rapid drying out and against rain for 12 hours. Cordon off the freshly laid surface for a period of at least 48 hours. After 24 hours the surfaces are ready for jointing. Car-loadable after 7 days. Fully loadable after 14 days.
